Compromising on your values
The human mind is incredible for how it tries to make coherence from all of the conflicting signals that it's getting from you and the environment.
For example, you may want to get into shape, but it's also hot and you want that ice cream. So your mind finds an excuse so both of your wants make sense in some way. It will tell you that it's just this once and I will workout twice as hard the next time. Or something similar.
However, that doesn't make you feel good eventually. And the more such trade-offs you make, the more stressful it can get.
Now imagine going to work that completely undermines your values. Each day your mind has to think of an excuse or a reason why you should continue working there. The more this goes on, the more you will forget your values and fool yourself that you like the job.
All while your body and mind keep telling you otherwise. Which creates friction and stress.
What to do about it?
1. Clarify what your values are
Without knowing them, you have no way of knowing what actions are against your values.
2. Establish clear boundaries
Revisit them once in a while to check whether you are not compromising on your values. For example, a boundary could be "To never work overtime" or "To never be on on-call duty". If you see that these boundaries are crossed too often, then you have a signal that this place or this way of work might not be for you.
The question then becomes - can it be fixed here? Or should you look for a new place? My suggestion is to always see what you can do in your current situation before jumping to another place. Yet, that might not always be possible.
